Read moreWelcome back for our sixth HUTS Town Guide! Today we are exploring Phoenicia, this buzz worthy little town in Ulster county has a big reputation for only having a population of approximately 250 people. Phoenicia has seemingly perfected the delicate balance of a booming summer tourism season all the while preserving the exact essence of the Catskills these weekenders are seeking.
Chances are if you’ve ended up here on our blog the Phoenicia Diner needs no introduction. You’ve either been there or know a friend of a friend who has. No matter the case, if you somehow have never heard about it then you’re in for a treat. This is not your average diner. Boasting classics from eggs anyway to a turkey club on one end of the spectrum to local pan fried trout and ratatouille on the other, there will be something for everyone at this elevated take on a diner. For a less buzzy and more down home local spot check out Brio’s Pizzeria for some delicious gourmet sesame coated thin crust pies.
For over 30 years Town Tinker tube rental has been providing all the equipment necessary to take on the winding waterways of the Catskills. Get settled in your tube and get ready for some serious level 2 whitewater rapids (which means 1-3 foot waves!) on the Esopus Creek. For a more leisurely activity try biking, walking, or cross country skiing the Ashokan Rail Trail. This 11.5 mile trail takes you from West Hurleyville to Boiceville wrapping around the Ashokan Reservoir with stunning views of the Catskills across the reservoir.
If the great indoors are more your speed, or if it’s just rainy hop on over to Mystery Spot Antiques for some eclectic finds and people. They have thousands of old vinyl records, a great selection of vintage clothing, and funky trinkets for you to discover and take home as a souvenir.
A weekend at The Graham & Co will have you feeling like a local in no time. This old motel was overhauled and brought into the 21st century, the accommodations are aesthetically pleasing without the pretentious price tag. Lounge on the four acre property by taking a dip in the pool or catch a midday nap in one of the hammocks, all right at the base of Hunter mountain.
This absolutely stunning 15.33 acre parcel; that is surveyed, approved for septic, and has an electric hookup within easy access, will have you looking out over this view every morning wondering why you didn’t leave the rat race of NYC sooner. If the views alone don’t swoon you then maybe the proximity to two of NY States best Ski mountains will, or the fact that this lot backs right up to NYS Forever Wild Forest Preserve property (which means no neighbors).
