Hi there! Welcome to the second in our HUTS Town Guide Series. Today we’re profiling Chatham, a charming village in historic Columbia County with a thriving community of independently owned retail shops, restaurants and a vibrant arts scene. Main Street boasts beautifully preserved architecture, including the landmark pendulum clock dating back to 1872 – the only one of its kind in original condition.

Where to Eat:

Treat yourself to the gooey goodness of a delicious specialty grilled cheese sandwich at Bimi’s Cheese Shop. Once you satisfy that craving, you can shop the selection of sustainably sourced charcuterie provisions among their shelves. Bimi’s is located on Main Street inside of historic Cady Hall – a former vaudeville theater from the late 19th century.
If you’re feeling thirsty, swing by the Chatham Brewing tasting room. You can test out some (or all, depending on where you want the day to take you) of the dozen or so microbrews on tap. 

What to do outside:

Keep an eye out for a Bobolink or Savannah Sparrow as you enjoy the scenic trails of Ooms Conservation Area at Sutherland Pond. This pastoral oasis boasts 180 acres of beautifully protected nature to explore all year round. Choose one of the many trails for hiking, fishing, gazing at the Catskill Mountains with the picnic lunch you just picked up at Bimi’s – or perhap a nap under the trees after that trip to the tasting room.

What to do inside:

Window shop (or actually shop) your way along Main Street. Idle away in the aisles of Chatham Bookstore, an independently run bookshop celebrating 40 years of turning pages. Poke around in Pookstyle, a curio shop that offers modern designs from around the world. Cozy up in the Warm Ewe, a yarn shop that offers tips and tricks to the wannabe knitter.

Where to Stay:

A bit down the road in East Chatham, you will find the lovely Inn at Silver Maple Farm. This eleven room charmer is where the Hudson Valley meets the Berkshires. For engaged couples whose wedding plans have been derailed this year,  you can come for the Elopement Special and stay for the gourmet breakfast.
